Artist Statement - Valerie Rosenkrantz

I’ve always loved the process of making art, especially from recycled objects. This process awakens joyous feelings in me. I started at a young age making dolls and moved on to paintings and pillows and anything I could cut and glue and sew and paint. My sister has kept almost everything I’ve given her, giving a timeline of my creative journey.

I’ve completed college and graduate school and had a professional career. I knew I needed to keep exploring, so I studied oriental body and energy work at the Berkeley School of Acupressure in 1999. In 2002, I became an ordained minister through The Alliance of Divine Love (ADL Chapel # 1373). I completed Usui Reiki Master Teacher Training in 2005 and then Tera Mai Reiki and Shaman’s Touch Master Teacher Training in 2008. My spiritual healing ’ministry’ cultivates self-healing, well-being and happiness into my clients’ physical, emotional and spiritual lives.

Our lives are unique creative journeys. Each of us has our own ideas and objects that excite us and influence our creative process. For years I’ve written in journals and kept track of my dreams and ideas that grab me. That led to making books and creatively decorating them in my own unique way. That led to keeping a secondary journal for a visual diary. I’ll often keep these visual diaries with me when I travel and draw views and objects that give me a spark of excitement. Then later I’ll use these images in other artworks.

I don’t always understand why something gives me a jolt of excitement. Those sparks of creative inspiration do make it back into my creative life at the right time. This happens when I honor my creative muse and collect that idea into my journal or visual diary or bring home that thing for my art collections. My creative journey has been continuous and mysterious.

My creative journey has become a spiritual experience. Each piece starts in the quiet of my heart. I reflect on the life of the person I am creating for. I often dream on a piece for a while until I can see it’s beginning into a physical realm. I allow each work the time it needs to take form. And all along I remember that joy is my companion.
